SCP - Old Man Joy

Another annual creepy birthday gift for an awesome friend and an equally awesome artist - ~guttershy!

This is a "fictional SCP" (all SCPs are fictional, but hey). If you are not familiar with The SCP Foundation, then go and familiarize yourself with it right now, because it's the best thing ever. If you like uber-realistic, clinical and scientific horror writing.

The base idea for Old Man Joy came from the twisted part of my mind. The art is by me, the description is by me, and the functionality and details are by my brother, ~woocky1 and me.

SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED] resembles an old man's face with an extremely exaggerated smile and completely white skin with black-brownish dirt in its wrinkles. Because of its extreme expression, it is impossible to determine if it has eyes. It stands, or hovers, on top of a large base made of an unidentified material, which seems to be a perfect blackbody. It is currently unclear whether or not SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED] is a living entity, as its nature contradicts both possibilities (read below).

It is possible that SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED]'s face does not physically exist, or does not fully exist in this dimension, as attempts to manipulate - or even touch it - have proven unsuccessful. Any object coming close to it becomes blurred and distorted when viewed either directly by sight, or via optical devices. The effect is purely visual; both the face and the blurred object remain fully intact. The face emits heat of exactly 36°C at all times - even when subject to different, extreme temperatures. The way light interacts with it suggests that it is made of flesh.

SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED]'s base is rectangular at the bottom (200 by 150 centimeters), and starts tapering down into a pyramidal shape, starting at 110 centimeters upward. Overall, the base's height is 210 centimeters. It is solid, impossible to damage, and has no temperature of its own; it instantly adapts temperature locally from whatever comes in contact with it. Its weight is approximately 1,982 kilograms, assuming the face has no weight.

SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED]'s face constantly looks at any and all observers - either direct, or ones viewing it through optical devices. It is therefore impossible to view it from any other direction than the front. When viewed by multiple observers at the same time, each observer reports that the face is looking straight at them.


SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED]'s effect can be somewhat beneficial, but it will result in death if overdone. When looking directly at SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED]'s face, all observers report an immediate mental bliss, happiness, and always start laughing after a few minutes of constant observation of the face. From the very beginning they also report a reluctance to stop looking at it, but that has been proven to be a matter of will, rather than part of SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED]'s effect.

CAUTION! SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED] can affect observers viewing it through any sort of device (including thermal and infrared cameras, X-ray, etc.). Even photographs, digital or analog, will be effective, though in a significantly lesser degree.

The levels of effect advancement are as follows:

1. Absolute mental bliss starting upon first eye contact. This effect is temporary and fades away within approx. 10 minutes after breaking eye contact with SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED]'s face.

2. After approx. 2-6 minutes of looking at the face, the observer starts chuckling and laughing. It is still possible to stop looking, and the effect will fade away after 15-20 minutes.

4. After approx. 20 minutes of looking at SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED], the subjects' laughter will almost completely prevent them from breathing. At this point, the laughter will only be getting stronger - even when eye contact with SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED] has been broken. All subjects die by choking within minutes of passing this level. It has been discovered in autopsy of all of these subjects, that their lungs have been crushed severely.

Additionally, all subjects affected in any degree by SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED] report seeing SCP-[DATA EXPUNGED] in their dreams very often. In most cases, the subject cannot look away from the face, and eventually chokes to death from laughter, which results in an abrupt awakening. This effect seems to be either permanent, or long-term. Some subjects describe the face in their dreams as having solid black eyes, often with thick, black tears pouring out.
